As we look ahead to the exciting things 2016 is going to bring, we have to sit back and marvel over what an incredible and strange year 2015 was!
Our lovely little shop opened its doors on Forsyth Street in March by our fearless leader Caroline, just in time for National Pencil Day (you can be sure we'll have a big bash for that this year!). Since then, it's been a whirlwind of excitement as we've met customers from all over the world, scoured the globe for new and exciting (and sometimes old and nostalgic!) pencils (including a trip to Japan in the summer), and hosted a simply incredible variety of news outlets who have introduced our shop to people from all walks of life.
Our store grew from being a one-woman bandstand to a home for enthusiastic pencil ladies (though pencil dudes are welcome, should any apply!). We currently staff three extremely knowledgeable ladies, and will send lots of love to our other two who'll return to college this winter. In December, we're happy to say we expanded operations to an office! Now your pencil goodies are packed with care from a basement-level office four doors down from our bright and shiny shop (you can expect we'll host events at our office some time in the future!)!
While overall amazing, the year had a few hiccups. Caroline injured her leg back in June (in what is the most interesting cautionary tale for New York City I've possibly ever heard - ask her to tell it sometime), piles of Pencil Of The Month packages threatened to swallow us whole, and holiday shipping was, unfortunately, scary at times. And then there was what we refer to as "New York Times Week," the terrifying but awesome time when the first really huge article came out about our store, back when it was just Caroline and I manning the shop and hosting the hoards of pencil fans who were eager to congratulate us and snag some wood-cased goodies. We learned a lot about the growing pains of a small business, but were frequently awed and humbled by the outpouring of support we've received. Truly, truly amazing stuff.
This year, we've got our eyes on contributing to the global pencil community with some treats of our own - stay tuned in the coming months for updates on our very own pencil case, among other surprises! We're also venturing to Paper World (OMG really?! An entire WORLD of stationery supplies? We could just die) in Frankfurt later this month, followed by a stay in Geneva to visit the illustrious Caran d'Ache factory, which is just utterly thrilling! (P.S. We'll be closed from January 28-February 4 for this trip!) We're focused on bringing our pencil fans the very best the world has to offer, while continuing to stay true to wood-cased favorites.
Thank you, you wonderful pencil geeks, for being supportive and amazing and for constantly asking us questions and pushing us to be the best pencil ladies we can be! We've met so many amazing this people, and our assessment remains true: pencil people are the nicest people on the planet. We've truly enjoyed nerding out with you over graphite and paper and wood.
