Hello, pencil friends. February is here. This is the month to honor major things: African-American history, the birthdays of some important American presidents, and for the next four weeks at CW Pencil Enterprise, our love of romantic comedies.
Done well, rom coms are delightful movie confections. The genre has plenty of flaws--for starters the films frequently forget that people of color and queer and disabled people fall in love, too--but at their best these movies are as satisfying as excellent stationery. They've got cheekiness, knowing humor, emotional honesty, and the everyday magic of falling in love. Also great chase scenes.
So you better believe we dream of the merging of the two--rom coms that feature the practical tools we specialize in: pencils!
For the month of February we'll share our very favorite romantic comedies and do for those movies' characters what we do for you year-round: match a person with their ideal pencil.
When customers come to the shop looking for their new favorite pencil, we ask a series of questions that can sound increasingly personal. Do they write with a heavy hand? Is this for figure drawing or taking the LSAT? How much do they need an eraser for fixing mistakes? Are they love-weary or open-hearted?
Function is key, but let's not forget aesthetics matter too. And the two frequently overlap: Does the intended user prefer a shiny finish or an uncoated wood? A round pencil will feel different than a hexagonal or triangular-barreled pencil. Do they like a sleek or cheerful color on the barrel?
Once we've narrowed things down I like to offer customers a few options and set them up at our test station so they can take them for a spin. With pencils, as with so many pursuits, you only know once you give it a try.
So please join us as we revisit our favorite rom coms and find our favorite characters their perfect pencils. There's something for everyone. And maybe even someone for everyone too.
