The first pencil ever made with a clutch mechanism, the Caran d'Ache Fixpencil is a 2.0mm lead holder with a simple metal body, a clutch mechanism, and a sharpener in the cap. As the story goes, the Fixpencil was invented in 1929 with the intention of being a replacement for wood-cased pencils should the impending war limit supplies for pencil manufacture.
One of the most iconic pencil brands still in operation, Caran d’Ache was founded in 1915 and has been family-run ever since (4th generation!). Their name is taken from 19th century political cartoonist Emmanuel Poiré, whose psuedonym was Caran d’Ache, a franco-fied version of "karandash," the Russian word for "pencil."
