A perfect journal, in our opinion: the Shinola Hard Linen Journal is bound in waterproof linen, features smooth acid-free paper that's great for all writing tools, and has a pocket in the back for stashing all of your ephemera. You won't find a prettier, more durable notebook in this price range.

Founded in Detroit in 2011, Shinola are known for their watches and leather goods, but also manufacture many other beautifully crafted, American-made products.

    nothing rhymes with orange

Published by Emily on Aug 29th 2021

This is an update to my earlier review: I ordered an orange one this time and I know it's a cliche, but nothing rhymes with orange. I take back all I said that was negative last time. I love this journal. While it still might not be the most durable journal I've ever used, it can't be beat for what it is: it's so pretty, it's lined and sized perfectly, and the paper is good enough (I've used many more pens in this one and I'd still stay away from fountain pens, but anything else I've put in here works, including gel pens of broad tips). I've now used it for two consecutive daily journals (I've been writing a lot lately) and I'm having a hard time switching to another journal, even to some luxury handmade journals I bought elsewhere. This is just the perfect everyday journal. If you see it for what it is, a perfect basic journal or notebook, then you'll find that no other journal quite rhymes with it no matter which color you choose.

"golden," but I call it "yellow"

Published by Emily on Jun 28th 2021

I chose the "golden" color option but I call it "yellow." Regardless of what color you chose, that sums up my experience with this journal. It's not quite gold, but it's yellow (a very nice color itself). There's a lot to like here: it's pretty, the ruling is great, and there are a sizable number of pages. Where this journal falls short is in durability and paper quality. I've used more durable journals, and this one is starting to wear after two months of heavy use and near completion. The paper is perfect for pencil, but I wouldn't necessarily try ink on it since it feels a little thin. It's prettier than other journals I've used, but not quite as durable. That's the tradeoff here.
