Caran d'Ache Edelweiss HB - Famous in Switzerland, this pencil can be found in convenience stores, post offices, and of course schools. Swiss pencils run middle-of-the-road in terms of hardness, making this a true HB pencil.
Palomino Blackwing 602 - The contemporary standard-bearer, this iconic pencil is the one most recognized by first-time shoppers. At about a B-grade, this pencil is soft and smooth, making it a perennial favorite.
Mitsubishi 9800 HB - A dark green icon in Japan, Mitsubishi's most affordable pencil is the perfect introduction to Japanese graphite. The smooth core and highly-lacquered wood are standard for all Mitsubishi pencils.
Apsara Absolute - The stand-out pencil from the enormous Hindustan factory in India, the Absolute writes dark and smooth with an extra-wide core. It also has a series of TV commercials dedicated to it.
Musgrave Test Scoring - In the glory days of Scantron exams, test scoring pencils were a ubiquitous utensil. Now they are more difficult to find, but the extra dark and shiny artificial graphite still defines a beloved pencil category.
Faber-Castell Grip 2001 HB - German pencils famously run on the harder side, and this is one of the most well-known German pencils. It's won design awards, and the very firm HB core is perfect for detail work and those who prefer a thinner line.
Each set includes one of each pencil, packaged in an envelope with an informational insert.
