For the past two years, we've been running a bimonthly book club, which we call the Orchard Street Reading Society in our shop. This is our current pick, which we'll be meeting to discuss on November November 4th:
The House by the Sea by May Sarton! It was chosen for us by our dear friend, Brittany Bond, whose Common Books Bookcart is one of our favorite fixtures in our neighborhood.
The House by the Sea (1977) is a journal written during May Sarton's time living on the coast of Maine. Throughout her career as a writer, she published dozens of volumes of poetry, fiction and non-fiction, but where she really shines as a writer is in her personal accounts of everyday life, and meditations on the importance of solitude. Brittany has long been a champion of May Sarton's work and that of many other lesser known female authors, and we're delighted to have her recommend a book for us.
